“‘Beauty Of The Discarded’ makes me think of how we have discarded how we are supposed to live as humans. Now we are realising that there’s some simpler ways of doing it and that the closer we are to the earth, the better.” -FKA TWIGS on her collaboration with Lyle XOX

"The idea of celebrity endorsements is a well-known phenomenon, but the growing trend of famous people promoting environmental causes is emerging at the same time that the climate crisis is inching further into the public awareness, which amplifies the importance of getting messages promoting environmental action to the masses.
Celebrities, with their wide reach and significant following, could potentially have the capacity to "really mobilize tremendous action" at a scale to effectively address change" Christy Denckla, an assistant professor of social and behavioral sciences at Harvard University, told ABC News.

Slowly but surely, more artists and public figures are supporting and wearing sustainable brands and designers -we love to see it!

From FKA Twigs wearing a face mask constructed from a bra, to Björk singing about salmon preservation, this article highlights the power of using one's platform for good.

Speaking of high art, Björk has created an environmental curriculum for Nordic schools, blending her advocacy and love for nature with education. She has also been a trailblazer in sustainable fashion, often collaborating with designers to create avant-garde looks that highlight the beauty of conscious hyper-creativity. And in 2023 she released the song ‘Oral’ with Rosalía to fight industrial fish farming in Iceland. Zing, boom!

Art and environmentalism aren't, and shouldn’t be, mutually exclusive.

Another notable moment was when a call-to-action video message from Greta Thunberg, the young Swedish climate activist, was shown at the end of Björk’s London concert in 2019.

Upcycled. Vintage. Recycled.

Unique looks are part of what makes these artists stand out. Why wear something lame that’s destroying the environment, when you can mix and match what’s already there and pave the way for others?

Erykah Badu has long supported local emerging designers, especially Black talent, wearing their designs throughout the 90s and early 2000s. In 2024, she won CFDA's Fashion Icon Award.

And Billie Eilish is an advocate for outfit repeating!

"Wearing only new clothes all the time is unnecessary and unsustainable. I wanted to celebrate their beauty and the craft of everyone who designed and made them by wearing them again." -Billie Eilish

Billie Eilish has made sustainability a vital part of her tours by implementing carbon-neutral initiatives. She partners with organizations like Reverb to reduce environmental impacts through measures such as eliminating single-use plastics, offering eco-friendly merch, as well as encouraging fans to bring reusable water bottles!

Angelina Jolie created Atelier Jolie to shake up the fashion world in the best way possible. Connecting us with emerging designers and master artisans? Yes, please Ms. Angie. Using deadstock and vintage materials to create one-of-a-kind pieces? Even better. Workshops, talks, and a platform that celebrates creativity and sustainability?

Now we’re talking!!

Anyone with a platform, big or small, has a responsibility to use it for good. And these people are definitely doing something right.
